Khalid Athar: Is the shift towards security a major change in SkyStream? Why did you take such a step and what is the risk associated with it?

Riyadh Adely: Every industry is evolved in response to the challenges faced by its markets and that was a major driver with the evolution of technologies since the early days of the human civilization. The same applies to companies, and the companies also evolve and advanced by the challenges/visions of its clients, and that is what happened with SkyStream, so we had to evolve and fulfill our customers increasing demands.

Conventional Satcom solutions can serve both militaries and securities but there is a need to do more in response to the increasing challenges to both market segments. We realized that the goal of today’s operational circumstances and threat situations, the protection of soldiers is of highest priority in today’s missions. Also we noticed an increased need to extend the operational range of tactical communications and those were the main focus for SkyStream defense the new division in the company.

Conventional Satcom solutions can serve both militaries and securities but there is a need to do more in response to the increasing challenges to both market segments.

We knew it is a big step and we made sure that we are ready for it.  Our concerns were not to jeopardize the high standards and expectations we demonstrated to our clients over the years, so we comprehended the challenges and oriented ourselves with the strategic partnership through providing them with the state of the art solutions that fulfills their needs.

KA: That is a nice vision, tell us more about SkyStream defense and its objectives.

RA: As I mentioned earlier, we have been working with such clients for years now and we have acquired successfully great references for different applications such as but not limited to comms on-the-move, comms on- the-pause, managed end to end secured networks.  We understood that there is always a need to do more and that was our next move to establish a new division looking after the needs of both securities and militaries and we call this division SkyStream defense.

SkyStream defense will continue providing the existing solutions we used to provide and will continue adding military applications that serves our clients.  The new division started strategic partnerships with solid companies in the military and security domains such as, Airbus defense, Inmarsat defense and other companies.  The major solutions that the division is currently providing is extending the range of the tactical communications beyond the border lines for both land and airborne applications.

The division is also looking after solutions that use high powered electromagnetic pulse to neutralize potential threats of all kinds of suicide bombers and threats coming from side bombs, Improvised explosives Devices (IED) and threats from drones.

KA: How do High Power Electromagnetic Pulses come into play?

RA: High power electromagnetic pulses may also be used to fight against modern electronic weapon systems and other electronic threats. Various high power sources have been developed emitting high power electromagnetic radiation in a single pulse or a burst of pulses targeting the control and computer electronics of modern electronic systems and infra structures. Those sources are able to disrupt the control units of engines and may be used to stop cars, to control admission to sensible or high value areas or to stop speed boats or jet-skis in order to control access to harbors and moored ships from sea side.

HPM (High-Power- Magnetics Wave) effectors offer the possibility of directing impulses against different electronic systems with the objective of causing malfunction. Products on the basis of HPM technology provide the opportunity to protect armed forces against Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), to stop getaway vehicles in moving traffic without employing physical force and permanently damaging vehicle electronics and to prevent unauthorized access to critical security areas. HPM effectors pose no health hazard to users and uninvolved individuals.

KA: Could you please give us an overview of the market demand for communications in the security and government space?

RA: The Government and specially the Military business was growing significantly in the last 5 years from local governments.  That is old news now due to unfortunate circumstances in the region which created the need to respond to the challenges.

The demand in the Military sector, was not limited to only space segments but it included terminals, systems integration and others.  Such demands were mainly coming from the GCC countries and Iraq.

The demand recently from local Militaries has evolved, mobility is one of the main application we are delivering to our clients to service many areas such as border control, navies and operations in battlefields, but that is not all we recently got involved in projects that requires consultancies, network design and implementation to manage many applications for different troops.

Iraq and Afghanistan were the anchor countries when we started the business, the US military and the local Internet requirement was our focus at that time. Today the situation is not the same, we had evolved since then, our main focus to be a solid player for Military and energy segments. The market responses has indicated that we are on the right path and we hope to be successful moving forward.
