The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) has sued mobile phone companies and internet providers in Egypt for shutting down their service during the recent unrest in the country.
The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information has filed a complaint with Egypt’s Prosecutor General, demanding an investigation into the Minister of Communications, as well as the CEOs of mobile phones companies Mobinil, Etisalat and Vodafone along with the CEOs of ISPs LINKdotNET, TE Data for criminal liability in participation in harming and killing demonstrators by cutting off Internet and telecommunication services in Egypt arbitrarily.
The mobile networks and ISPs were forced off-air by the government during the recent uprising. Although the mobile networks are all controlled by foreign companies, they are bound by local laws and were also forced to send out propaganda text messages supporting the former government of Hosni Mubarak.
