HTC and Sony Ericsson taken to court, location based services patents infringement cited

Mosaid Technologies is a patent holding company based in Canada. It has sued HTC America and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications (USA), citing infringement of three U.S. patents associated with the emergency 911 (E-911) standard that has been stipulated by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
The patent portfolio under whose umbrella, the lawsuit has been filed was acquired only in early 2011 by Mosaid. Whenever a user makes an emergency 911 call, the patents facilitate the transmission of the phone’s geographic location.
According to the lawsuit, Mosaid stated that its U.S. patent nos. 5,650,770; 6,198,390; and 6,518,889 are infringed by cell phones manufactures and sold by HTC and Sony Ericsson in the United States. Navigational receivers, radio transmitters, switches, circuits, sensors and other emergency call features including a GPS receiver are asserted to have been found to be in violation of the patents.
