The iPad 2 has almost sold out across the USA, after an opening weekend which saw almost a million devices sold across America, and many customers are leaving Apple stores empty-handed.
On the Apple.com website, shipping times have been upped from two to three weeks to four to five weeks after the massive opening weekend.
According to Computer World, the e-store indicator changed several times on 11th March, from two to three business days, then five to seven days, and then two to three weeks, before settling on four to five weeks.
Brian White, an analyst with Ticonderoga Securities told Computer World that shortages at retail stores that received new shipments of iPad 2s on 15th March were continuing.
Apple stores in both New York City and San Francisco had long queues outside early yesterday, and Apple handed out tickets to some of those waiting, telling them it was unlikely they would be able to buy an iPad 2, said White.
Apple will also be postponing iPad 2 sales in Japan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that shook the island.
“We are delaying the launch of the iPad 2 in Japan while the country and our teams focus on recovering from the recent disaster,” Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris told Reuters. “Our hearts go out to the people of Japan, including our employees and their families, who have been impacted by this terrible tragedy.”
Reports indicate that the next shipment of Apple iPad 2s will hit the US on 21st March, but White has concerns that the massive sales of the device will impact the date of its launch across 25 other countries. The international release is currently scheduled for 25th March.
“The iPad 2…has clearly been met with overwhelming demand, which makes us wonder if Apple will have enough supply for the international launch on 25th March,” he said.
