Morocco’s Wana wins telecom ruling

Morocco’s telecommunications regulator has ruled in favor of fixed and mobile operator Wana in a case that dates back to June 2010 against the company’s rivals Maroc Telecom and Medi Telecom. According to the ruling, Maroc Telecom and Medi Telecom were breaking regulations on their subscriptions.
“It is an important ruling because it means that no company, even the larger ones, can go around the law,” said Mohamed Abdallah, an official with the ministry of communications.
He said that Wana won because they “showed that the other companies were breaking our regulator’s rules on contracts less than one-year in duration.”
According to Wana, on two-year contracts, “subscribers who cancel after one year can be required to reimburse the difference between the handset’s price on two-year and one-year contracts. “
The regulator, ANRT has given the country’s three mobile operators until the end of March to present their revised contract clauses conforming to the stated regulations, to be applied to existing and future subscribers.
