Nokia Siemens Networks Partners with ChinaUnicom to Save Energy

ChinaUnicom’s subsidiary in Anhui province is laying the foundation to reduce the energy consumption of its mobile base transceiver station (BTS) sites by as much as 20 percent. The carrier announced it will deploy Nokia Siemens Networks’ Energy Solutions including cooling box and battery cooling cabinet to replace more costly air conditioning units.
Li Chao, general manager of Anhui Unicom, calls the collaboration “truly a win-win situation for us. It will help us meet the government imperative to mobile operators to reduce energy consumption. In the long run, it will also help us reduce our network operating costs from anywhere between 10-30 percent, while improving service availability.”
The bulk of the energy consumed on a BTS site is room air conditioning. Nokia Siemens Networks’ Energy Solutions can help lower average ambient temperatures to reduce the dependency on expensive air-conditioning, thereby reducing total power consumption.
Xue Rui, head of Nokia Siemens Networks’ global services business in Greater China, says, “Our solution provides a comprehensive approach to reduce energy consumption in mobile operators’ networks. Not only do we help operators meet their green targets but also help them do so cost efficiently.”
As operators expand their networks, especially in rural areas, they are confronted with rising energy costs and the need to minimize their carbon footprint. According to Nokia Siemens Networks Energy Solutions “provide a comprehensive approach to reduce energy consumption in telecom networks, which accounts for 86 percent of the total energy consumed by operators or 10-30 percent of network operating expenditure. It also helps operators achieve reduced energy bills while contributing to environmental sustainability and helps them meet their corporate social responsibility objectives.”
Nokia Siemens Networks provides a complete portfolio of mobile, fixed and converged network technology, as well as professional services including consultancy and systems integration, deployment, maintenance and managed services.
