Ericsson wins Colombia broadband deal

Ericsson has won a contract from Colombia’s Azteca Comunicaciones for a national broadband project. Ericsson will install IP network equipment to deliver broadband services to over 397 municipalities in Colombia.
Grupo Salinas, which owns Azteca, won the contract to operate Colombia’s national fibre optic project from the government’s ministry of information technologies and communications last year.
Alexandra Reyes, Azteca Comunicaciones Colombia’s CEO, said: “Together with Ericsson, we will bring high-speed broadband to even the most remote regions of the country. We expect this to result in broad access to competitive services, increased employment and provide better welfare for the population.”
The company awarded an earlier contract, in April, to Alcatel-Lucent. Under the strategy, part of the government’s Plan Vive Digital, 753 towns and 2,000 public institutions will be connected via fibre by 2014.
Jan Häglund, Ericsson’s head of IP and broadband, said: “This contract is a major endorsement of our fourth generation IP network solution and marks the beginning of a new partnership between Ericsson and Azteca Comunicaciones Colombia.”
