The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) announced that 15 new members have joined the Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) Taskforce, bringing the total number of members to 33, representing government entities, private companies, service providers, academic institutions, and financial institutions, in addition to aviation, oil and gas sectors.
CRA established the IPv6 Taskforce to facilitate IPv6 adoption in Qatar. The members of the Taskforce ensure the readiness of their network to adopt IPv6 and ensure a smooth and gradual transition from IPv4 to IPv6. The Taskforce’s primary mission is educating and promoting IPv6 by providing technical consultations and training, in addition to providing necessary guidelines to entities wishing to adopt IPv6.
The 15 new members are Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Ministry of Public Health, General Tax Authority, General Authority of Customs, Qatar Museums, Qatar National Library, Qatar Gas, Nakilat, Oryx GTL, in addition to Qatar Foundation, University of Doha for Science and Technology, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Community College of Qatar, and Weill Cornell University.
“I would like to thank all Taskforce members for their support and cooperation and would like to invite others to join us in this journey towards contributing to the adoption of IPv6 in Qatar, which will serve as the backbone of the internet for the next several decades, as it provides a larger number of internet addresses, which in turn enable internet growth and ensures the readiness for new upcoming next generation technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT). Thus, contributes to the development of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector and supports Qatar National Second Development Strategy 2018-2022 and Qatar National Vision 2030 goals; develop a sustainable and high-quality infrastructure that supports the national economy and is capable of keeping abreast of the latest smart technologies and creating a balance between an oil-based and a knowledge-based economy, towards the diversification of the country’s economy,” said Ali Al-Suwaidi, Technical Affairs Department Director, CRA.
