The 21st Space Generation Congress (SGC) organized by the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) has commenced in the vibrant city of Baku, marking a historic milestone as Azerbaijan proudly hosts this esteemed event for the very first time. With an impressive gathering of over 150 young and enthusiastic participants representing 50 different countries, the congress aims to facilitate and fortify communication between the next generation of space enthusiasts and a wide spectrum of organizations, institutions, and academic communities engaged in space exploration. The overarching objective is to empower these budding talents with enhanced competencies in the ever-evolving field of space science and technology.
In her inaugural address, Valentina Luchetti, the Acting Executive Director of the Space Generation Advisory Council, underscored the paramount significance of the chosen theme for this year’s congress: “Creating a Space Community to Inspire, Unite, and Support Humanity.” This overarching theme is a powerful testament to the pivotal role that space plays in propelling progress and innovation right here on our home planet. Engaging in thought-provoking discussions and deliberations, the council endeavors to shine a spotlight on the immense potential inherent in space technologies. These technologies have the capability not only to tackle pressing global challenges but also to foster robust international cooperation and catalyze socioeconomic development across the globe. Luchetti eloquently stated, “This event serves as a stepping stone towards the creation of a dynamic mentoring platform, a veritable launchpad for those embarking on their professional journey in the realm of space exploration, where they can draw from the wealth of wisdom and experience of seasoned professionals.”
Samaddin Asadov, the Chairman of the Board of the Space Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Azercosmos, extended a warm and heartfelt welcome to all the participants in his address. He passionately emphasized the ever-expanding role of space as a transformative and unifying force, highlighting the keen interest of numerous nations, including Azerbaijan, in the realm of space research and cooperation. Asadov went on to elucidate Azercosmos‘ noble mission, which revolves around the dissemination of knowledge about the latest innovations in space to the public and, importantly, inspiring and encouraging the younger generation to actively participate in space-related activities and groundbreaking research endeavors. “By hosting this congress,” he affirmed, “we are making a significant stride towards the realization of our core objectives. Azerbaijan, while relatively nascent in the sphere of space exploration as an independent nation, boasts a rich history steeped in space-related activities.”
Notably, Azerbaijan made history by hosting the International Astronautical Congress in 1973. Fast forward half a century to 2023, and Azerbaijan is poised to once again take the center stage, playing host to the global space community. During this momentous gathering scheduled from October 2nd to 6th, 2023, opportunities will abound for delegates to engage in enriching dialogues concerning the fortification of the space industry, the emergence of global trends, and the forging of strategic partnerships and groundbreaking innovations.
Over the course of the three-day congress, participants will delve into a multitude of pivotal subjects, ranging from the critical domains of space and cyber security to the ever-pressing issue of climate change. Deliberations will also encompass discussions on the crucial matter of space sustainability and the imperative need for gender equality in this dynamic field.
