Work is bang on schedule for the ambitious network Turbocharging Programme currently being undertaken by Nawras in the Sultanate of Oman. New Huawei radio access technology is already installed in every base station from Al Bustan to Darsait following the start of the network modernisation in August at Al Amerat. Customers are starting to feel the difference and this is just the beginning.
Nawras has replaced equipment at almost 100 base stations so far with the Turbocharging Programme planned to reach PDO area and Qurum within the coming week. The network upgrade is scheduled to range beyond Mussanah by the end of 2012 and to cover the entire Nawras footprint by the end of 2014. When work is completed, every base station will have 2G and 3G+ coverage and many will also have 4G LTE and WiMAX.
Population coverage with 3G+ will have more than doubled by the end of the Turbocharging Programme and the total number of Nawras base stations will have increased by more than 120 per cent. This vast improvement will positively impact the customer experience by delivering fast broadband internet and enhanced capacity across the country, particularly in the Batinah region.
Thanks to the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, Nawras has been given additional frequency which will lead to the doubling of network capacity and speed in the very near future. This expansion can be compared to extending a single lane track to a multi-lane highway and will enable the network to handle much more traffic in a faster and more efficient way. As a result, customers will start to enjoy mobile broadband internet speeds that are more than twice as fast as those experienced today.
The network is being further upgraded by building another lane on the highway. Coverage will be further enhanced with the introduction of a new radio network frequency by the end of March 2013. This development will give a major boost to in-building coverage. Customers will notice the difference when visiting shopping malls and office complexes as well as inside residential villas and apartments.
Nawras Chief Executive Officer, Ross Cormack, explained the scale of the programme by saying, “We are making real progress with the Turbocharging Programme. Turbocharging means a huge increase in coverage and capacity across the network which will give our customers superfast mobile broadband internet at work, at home or on the move. Our service continues as normal at the same time as hundreds of people are working on a 24-hour basis to deliver this significant network upgrade. We are proud to be bringing the latest technology to the people of Oman as we usher in a new era of communications and raise the bar for customer experience.”
