SK Telecom selects Nokia Siemens' optical network equipment

South Korean operator SK Telecom has selected Nokia Siemens Networks’ 100G-ready optical network equipment for capacity expansion. SK Telecom will increase its network capacity by four times with 40Gbps transmission, and prepare its network for transition to 100G capacity in the future. The system uses DWDM, where a number of different ‘colours’ or wavelengths of light transports data down the same optical fibre, each carrying information at 40G. As part of the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will deliver its hiT 7300 DWDM platform to SK Telecom. Based on the CP-QPSK modulation format, the company’s coherent detection 40G transponder will utilise the operator’s installed DWDM network infrastructure to transition to 40G line rate.
