MTN announced plans to spend over USD 1 billion in 2012 to improve its network in Nigeria, following a demand from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for improved service delivery, Bloomberg reports. According to MTN Nigeria’s Corporate Executive Director, Akinwale Goodluck, the growing subscriber base requires an expansion and improvement in the network and services. Goodluck said the investment will relieve congestion and improve the quality of the network. The funds will be directed toward 2G and 3G technologies, MTN’s core network and power generators to run transmission stations, he said. Last year, NCC pressed operators in the country, including MTN, Globacom and Airtel, to improve mobile network services or face a ban on signing up new customers.
