Myanmar to Loosen State Controls on Telecoms Market

The mobile phone market in Myanmar is tightly controlled, with handsets being limited to well connected business people and the military. Attempts to loosen the controls have been hampered by the high costs that are beyond that of most citizens, though the government plans to loosen the state’s grip on several key industries, including the telecoms market.
Myanmar’s President Thein Sein outlined a “second wave of reforms” that would aim at tripling the country’s GDP by 2016 after decades of stagnation, during a speech.
