GBI CEO Ahmed Mekky Advances 31 Spots on Global Telecoms Business Power 100 2013 List
Mr. Ahmed Mekky, Co-Founder, Board Member and CEO of Gulf Bridge International (GBI), has been listed in Global Telecoms Business Power 100 list of industry leaders and influencers ranking at number 63, up by 31 spots from 2012’s list. Mr. Ahmed Mekky, one of a handful of Arab leaders on the list, joins the ranks of global telecom leaders from Apple, Google, Amazon and Microsoft.
“This appointment is a testament to the progress GBI has made since its establishment and I am honored to have led the company to where it is now,” said Mr. Mekky. “What we have built is almost impossible to replicate and the industry is recognizing us for our efforts. GBI has been steadily growing over the last 4 years joining the ranks of global companies that are reflected on the list. I am humbled to have been included amongst such professionals”.
GBI is an international, private cable company that owns and operates the MENA region’s most geographically comprehensive and technology advanced fiber optic network. Established in December 2008, the company launched its commercial operations in February 2012 connecting all the countries of the Gulf region to one another and providing onward connectivity eastwards to Mumbai, India and westwards to Mazara, Italy from where GBI also operates a European network connecting to all the main business hubs in the continent.
March 2013, GBI announced the launch of a new route, The North Route. The link consists of routes through Iraq and Turkey, which reduce latency time for connectivity from the Gulf and Asia to Europe. Today, GBI offers connectivity from Europe to all of the Gulf countries via the traditional submarine route (Mediterranean, Egypt and the Red Sea), and terrestrially via Turkey and Iraq.
Outside of GBI, Mr. Mekky plays an active role in the global telecoms industry. Mr. Ahmed Mekky co-chairs the SAMENA Subsea Working Group, and is a member of the Board of Governors of the Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC) making him the first and only member to represent a company from the Middle East.
In Egypt, Mr. Mekky sits on the board of the Information Technology Industry Development Agency, ITIDA, which is the executive IT arm of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, MCIT. He is also on the Board of the Italian Egyptian Business Council which is a non-profit, non-governmental organization formed to facilitate and develop economic relations between Italy and Egypt. Most recently, Mr. Mekky has been invited to join the Industry Committee of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) in Egypt as a committee member.
