Huawei Makes Debut in Oman Retail Market

New agreement with distributor ABT marks first time company offers handset devices directly to consumers

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, has announced a new partnership with and ABT, a professional managed retail, wholesale, trading and distribution company in Oman, which will see Huawei’s full range of consumer handset devices now available to the public for the first time ever on the open market in Oman.

While Huawei’s global range of consumer electronics—which includes smartphones, tablets, and mobile Wi-Fi devices—had been available previously through telecom operators, the partnership with ABT will see Huawei aim to gain a larger market share in the Sultanate by offering its products directly and indirectly to consumers.

As part of Huawei’s push into the Oman retail sector, the company also confirmed the local availability of its latest premium smartphone devices the Ascend P2—the world’s fastest 4G LTE smartphone—and the Ascend Mate—the world’s largest smartphone with a 6.1” screen. Huawei’s main ‘Ascend’ smartphone line spans four different product series including a Youth, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond class which each offer a unique technology package to consumers at a variety of different price points.

Such devices are set to appear on retail shelves immediately and will include placement in popular outlets throughout the Sultanate.

As part of the latest contract, owners of Huawei devices will also be able to use nine Huawei-authorized service centers across the country in addition to 25 collection centers supported through ABT.

Huawei is currently one of the world’s top five smartphone brands[1] with the GCC seen as a core geography for Huawei’s emerging consumer electronics division adding vast potential for growth. Essential to that expansion has been a targeted effort by Huawei in extending its retail presence through agreements with telecom operators as well as building a more robust retail channel network.

The company’s global rise in the consumer electronics industry has also been supported by longstanding strengths in the ICT research & development field. Huawei annually invests an average of more than 10% of its total revenue into R&D with the company maintaining a total of 16 R&D centers and 28 joint innovation centers worldwide. In 2012 alone, Huawei invested $4.83 billion—or 13.7% of its total sales revenue—into research and development programs.

Huawei’s most recent growth within the Middle East has helped the company’s worldwide consumer business realize global sales revenue of $7.7 billion last year—an increase of more than 8% year-on-year—shipping more than 127 million devices.
