President Message on WTISD 2011

Globally all the evidence suggests that ICT remains an active force in every field of life today. It remains a technology that will continue to facilitate the future growth and improvement of human society. ICTs are constantly reshaping the way the world communicates while creating opportunities for a better life through long-term, sustainable development, not least among the most disadvantaged sections of our society. The information and communication technology in Pakistan branched out and evolved at an amazing pace during the last decade. In Pakistan it has served as a tool for the socio-economic development and played a vital role in advancing economic growth and reducing poverty it directly influencing the productivity, cost effectiveness and competitiveness in various industries.

The World Telecom Day Theme for 2011 “Better life in rural communities with ICT” focuses on the role of Information and Communication Technologies in the rural communities. PTCL has taken the major initiatives to upgrade its network connecting the small tiny villages in the rural areas believing that ICTs are means of providing accessible and affordable information and education, while allowing marginalized groups to play a key role in the economic development. PTCL Broadband aims to deliver these social and economic benefits of ICTs to the rural areas through affordable broadband.

PTCL has joined hands with USF for the cause to promote the development of telecom services in the un-served length and breadth of the country and has redefined the established boundaries of the telecommunications market and is shifting the productivity functions to new heights. PTCL is in partnership with USF for projects in basic telephony access, broadband and optical fiber connectivity in underserved/un-served areas of the country and extending optical fiber connectivity to remote areas of Baluchistan province to connect them with national optical fiber backbone network.

We, at PTCL support the WTISD 2011 theme for an improved, secure and healthier world for ourselves and our future generations. Being the industry leader and a socially responsible organization we are aware of our responsibilities and understand the importance of providing the benefits of ICT growth to the rural areas of the country. We are committed to ensuring that people everywhere have reasonable access to information and communication technologies. On this International Day, let us resolve to fully bind the great potential of the digital revolution in the service of life-saving relief operations, sustainable development and lasting peace in the rural areas.
