Qtel Qatar gets new CEO

Qatari incumbent operator Qtel Group has appointed Sheikh Saud Bin Nasser Al Thani as the new CEO of its operation in Qatar.
Dr. Nasser Marafih, who previously held the role, will now focus exclusively on his duties as CEO of Qtel Group.
Previously, Al Thani held the role of executive director of HR and general services of Qtel Qatar. Al Thani joined Qtel in 1990, and has handled key projects like the restructuring of the organisation in 1998, the structure review in 2000 and the job evaluation and compensation review with Qtel’s auditors KPMG. In his new role, Al Thani will direct operations throughout Qatar.
Al Thani also sits on the board of Nawras in Oman, which is part of Qtel Group, in addition to playing a key role on a number of management and audit committees within Qtel Qatar.
During Qtel’s international expansion, Marafih held the dual roles of Qtel Qatar CEO and Qtel Group CEO. Al Thani’s appointment as CEO of Qtel Qatar will enable Marafih to focus on his group-CEO duties.
Marafih began his career at Qtel in 1992 as an expert advisor from the University of Qatar. Since becoming CEO in 2002, Marafih has been successfully guiding it through its transformation program and the restructuring of the company in Qatar and across the region.
Qtel also announced the appointment of Waleed Al-Sayed as the new chief operating officer of Qtel Qatar. Sayed, who was formerly executive director of customer services, joined the company in 1987.
Al-Sayed has held senior roles across sales, marketing, project management, business solutions, communication and customer services within Qtel. Nick Dent, formerly COO of Qtel Qatar, will work with Al-Sayed on the transfer process, before moving to a new role within the Qtel Group.
