Qualcomm snapdragon chip takes smart path

Qualcomm (QCOM) is the No. 1 maker of chip sets used in cellphones and is also making a big push to get its chips into other mobile devices.

The San Diego-based company saw sales jump 36% for its fiscal year ended Sept. 25, helped by its Snapdragon line of chips. First shipped in 2008, the chips are used in many smartphones and other mobile devices. The company says Snapdragon shipments rose fourfold in fiscal 2011.

More than 300 devices running Snapdragon have been announced, with another 350 in development, the company says.

Qualcomm is also pushing into displays with its technology called Mirasol.

William Davidson, senior vice president of global marketing, recently spoke with IBD about the company.
