The newly elected Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union Looking forward to have next Plenipotentiary Conference in the UAE
In his statement to the media, the newly elected Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, Houlin Zhao praised the United Arab Emirates for its continued support for the ITU and pointed out that the whole world is anticipating the next Plenipotentiary Conference which will be held in the UAE in 2018. “We appreciate very much the cooperation and support received from UAE in the recent years, and we look for further future cooperation to fulfil the Union’s missions and objectives. We are looking forward in 2018 to have our next Plenipotentiary Conference in UAE,” said Zhao.
H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, Director General of the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority, was one of the first international delegates to congratulate, China’s Houlin Zhao shortly after being named the new ITU Secretary General today during the 2014 ITU Plenipotentiary Conference held in South Korea’s port city Busan. Zhao will head the ITU for the next four years to continue the mission of the current secretary-general Hamadoun Toure. H.E. Al Ghanim delivered a speech on behalf of the UAE government to congratulate Zhao on his new position and the confidence he has gained from voters and praised his long expertise promising to pursue work and coordination with him in the future.
“On behalf of the United Arab Emirates, I would like to extend warmest congratulations to Mr. Zhao for being named to head the ITU. We wish you every success in the next four years. I would like to assure you of the UAE’s full support in your coming tenure and we will work closely with you and with the elected team to support the ITU’s activities and fulfil its missions in order to achieve the set strategic objectives,” said Al Ghanim.
Mr. Zhao received congratulation messages from the participating international delegates who all agreed that electing Zhao represents a continuation of the global spirit directed towards reinforcing the ICT’s role in sustainable development and attaining World Summit goals. The current Secretary-General, Dr. Hamadoun Toure praised the broad expertise of the newly elected Secretary-General pointing out that the organization will be in good hands for the coming four years and will be able to proceed in implementing plans and strategies of the global ICT sector. He also thanked the heads of various offices in the International Telecommunication Union who played a prominent role in the successes and achievements made during his tenure. Toure also stressed the importance of implementing an organized and seamless transition process to ensure proceeding with all initiatives and projects listed on the ITU agenda for the coming years.
Zhao expressed his profound gratitude to the current Secretary-General for his tireless efforts over the past eight years. He also expressed his thanks to all Member States for their confidence and support and assured to continue the success journey initiated by the current Secretary General and maintain his achievements.
Many countries expressed their support for the new Secretary-General including the United States of America, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Sultanate of Oman. They all praised the efforts of the current Secretary General and expressed confidence and support for the new ITU head.
The new Secretary General was unanimously elected by all Member States and received 156 votes, without any abstentions and blank votes, which reflects the confidence of the ITU members in his abilities and expertise. The handover ceremony will take place in December where the new secretary general will start his mission starting January 2015.
