Pakistan’s PTCL launches VDSL2 copper broadband service with Alcatel-Lucent

PTCL and Alcatel-Lucent have the launched VDSL2 Bonding Technology in Pakistan, pioneering the commercial launch of this technology in the global telecoms industry. PTCL has now become among the very few internet service providers in the world, and the first in Pakistan, to initiate the deployment of ultra high-speed broadband access on copper.
The new broadband access project, scheduled to be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2011, uses Alcatel-Lucent’s VDSL2 expertise. Alcatel-Lucent is providing PTCL with its Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) IP access platform, which supports VDSL2 bonding. Alcatel-Lucent will also supply bonding-ready customer premises equipment (CPE). According to a recent study from HIS iSuppli, simultaneous access to applications such as P2P file-sharing, online gaming, audio streaming, VoIP and IPTV will soon require bandwidths between 50 and 100 Mbps. This requirement fits well within the capabilities that PTCL’s new VDSL2 service is providing.
With the VDSL2 launch in Pakistan, PTCL now counts among a handful of operators worldwide to use Alcatel-Lucent’s innovative VDSL2 technology, which has already been deployed by
Belgacom, STC, Swisscom, Telekom Austria, M-net (Germany), and South Yorkshire Digital Region (UK).
