Nepal Telecom implements MSAN technology to improve internet access

State-backed national PTO Nepal Doorsanchar Company Limited (Nepal Telecom, or NT) is overlaying parts of its network with Multi Service Access Network (MSAN) technology to improve data speeds for customers taking its high speed internet services. MyRepublica reports that theMSAN upgrade will be used for fixed voice, data and video services, and is targeted at areas of the country where the PSTN is underdeveloped in terms of local exchanges. NT spokesperson Surendra Thike says that 69 exchanges have been established in rural and suburban areas of the mountain Kingdom, each providing capacity for up to 500 lines. In its current financial year, the incumbent operator is looking to install more than 100,000 new lines via 400 MSAN exchanges across the country. Tariff plans for the new MSAN-based internet services will be similar to those offered on its xDSL plans, Thike said, adding that the 384kbps service would cost NPR1,500 ($17.90) a month, while a lower 192kbps plan would be charged at NPR900 ($10.6) . A dozen regions in and around Kathmandu – including Kritipur, Naubise and Malekhu – can receive the new service along with a further ten areas in the east (including Pakhribaas, Mangalbare and Kerabari), 18 in the west (including Hemja, Aryabhanjyang, Bhotewodar, Marpha), ten in the mid-west region and six in the far-west region.
