Huawei Technologies donates 15 computers to Coast Region school

Local students in lower and upper education have been challenged to study Information and Communications Technology (ICT) subjects which would enable them to move in line with the globalising world.
The call was made on Monday in Dar es Salaam by Peter Jiang who is a senior manager of Huawei Technologies Tanzania Company soon after handing over 15 computers to Matimbwa secondary school located in Bagamoyo District, Coast Region.
He said ICT, if well utilised, cannot only help in stimulating social and economic development but is also a powerful tool for extending educational opportunities, both formal and non-formal.
“In order to compete with the rest of the world, one needs to be computer literate. Our donation to schools will be a breakthrough and a new beginning in ensuring that school going children are computer literate, from the very beginning. We hope the students can touch the computers and use it, which will help in disseminating computer and ICT basic knowledge transfer to Tanzania students,” he added.
Jiang said the company is committed to improving more schools’ infrastructure and studying environment gradually through “Huawei ICT Star programme”.
“We have already rendered support to three different schools as part of this programme. We may consider bringing on board sponsorship of ICT students at university level to enrich this programme,” he added.
The company through, its ‘Huawei ICT Star Programme for Tanzania Education’ pledged to render more support to development of conducive learning environment for ICT in Tanzanian schools in a bid to enable students move in line with the globalising world.
The ICT programme was launched in November last year and seeks to support primary and secondary schools as well as universities, to develop ICT interests, which will contribute to the development of ICT industry in Tanzania.
Hamza Msagule, the Matimbwa Secondary School headteacher located, while receiving the computers, pledged to make good use of the gadgets so as to benefit future generations.
“I pledge to take good use of the computers. We have teachers to teach the students the basic programmes. In today’s world one has to be computer literate. Thanks very much to Huawei doe the support. I know they are a great telecommunication company in the world,” he said.
Huawei Technologies towards the end of last year donated a total of USD30,000 to three schools in Tanzania, two on Mainland and one in the Isles.
