Wearable technology has been around since the first wristwatches, but according to analysts, devices worn could be more evocative of accessories seen in movies such as ‘Back to the Future’ than your average Casio wristwatch.
With Google Inc. giving the public a glimpse of the future of wearable electronics with its Project Glass spectacles, it appears that a world where technology is incorporated into all manner of accessories would soon be revealed. So what is Project Glass? In a simplest form, Project Glass is your Smartphone in a pair of glasses. Just think of all the tasks your phones does: Makes/Receives calls, Surfs the internet, Checks E-mail, Takes pictures, Plays music, Social media and much more – well, imagine that all being performed by a pair of glasses.
The technology certainly appears impressive, and there are a number of potential uses. However, would we really be comfortable wearing smart glasses to compare prices of large stores in the local supermarket or finding directions?
Another rumor around the corner is creation of ‘smart watch’ by Apple Inc. The rumors are discussing upon the concept of an iPod Nano watch, which Apple has endorsed semi-officially by releasing 17 new watch face designs last year, is a great start. It is anticipated that Apple could polish it to a higher sheen by releasing its own branded smart watch product. A networked iPod Nano plus iPhone would be a notable step forward for iOS users. Strapping the network to the wrist would integrate mobile technology more deeply into everyday life. It may seem like a subtle shift, but not having to remove your phones from your pocket to complete certain tasks makes mobile tech noticeably more seamless.
There’s little doubt that the future is more fascinating. Google’s Android-powered, augmented-reality glasses will be available to consumers in 2014. Apple has also patented similar technology through wrist watches probably. How long until we’re wearing smart all around us?
According to analysts at IMS Research, the market for wearable electronics products such as smart glasses and watches is actually set to boom in the next few years, as the public becomes more fascinated to use such devices.
By 2016 however, analysts believe that the appeal will have widened to more mainstream applications, with conservative estimations sizing the total market for wearable electronics, including military applications, at $6 billion.
According to IMS Research analyst Theo Ahadome, the successful introduction of Google’s smart glasses, as well as a rumoured Apple smart watch, could create even more interest in wearable electronics.
At present, wearable devices are concentrated around a few products mainly in the healthcare, medical, fitness and wellness application areas. There is a greater use-case for wearable technology to transmit data such as vital signs and track user performance.
In future, wearable technology will have a strong impact on smart watches, smart glasses, sleep sensors, industrial and military heads-up display and hand-worn terminals that will result in rapid expansion of market for wearable technology. Introduction of Google’s smart glasses and Apple smart watch will be part of the new wave of wireless wearable devices.
