PAC to study VoIP, frequency license

A sub-committee of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) under Legislature- Parliament has decided to carry out a detailed study of the frequency distribution and irregularities in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
The sub-committee has asked the Ministry of Information and Communication (MoIC) to send its undersecretary Anup Nepal to assist in the technical study.
“The sub-committee has asked MoIC to send its under-secretary as a resource person to help study the frequency distribution, VoIP scam and other telecom related issues,” the committee said.
PAC on January 13 had formed a sub-committee to investigate into the frequency distribution, royalty dues and irregularities in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
It has already directed Nepal Telecom Authority (NTA) to submit a detailed technical report, analysis, comments and other conditions, based on which license to telecom service providers was given.
The committee investigated the distribution of the frequency for the second generation (2G) and the third generation (3G) mobile service, VoIP scam, and details of revenue dues and loses of telecom operators, and prepare a detail report. VoIP has been a huge revenue loss to the government coffer and a headache too. Though the government has opened the VoIP for telecom operators, the illegal VoIP is bleeding the government coffer.
Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) under the Nepal Police has cracked down on about 200 VoIP operators in the valley and is actively tracking others, it said.
