UAE’s broadband penetration level is expected to reach the 100{e1f18614b95d3cd6e4b3128e1cd15d99b042a60a5a19c19b7a8e07e7495efa10} mark by 2012, and the country’s fixed broadband penetration has reached 40{e1f18614b95d3cd6e4b3128e1cd15d99b042a60a5a19c19b7a8e07e7495efa10} in the country, it was revealed during the inaugural session of the MECOM event at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.
Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansoori, UAE minister of economy quoted a Cisco study stating that UAE is placed among the top 10 countries globally for the quality of its broadband service. He also said that it is forecast that the country is to lead the world with 100{e1f18614b95d3cd6e4b3128e1cd15d99b042a60a5a19c19b7a8e07e7495efa10} broadband penetration by 2012.
Al Mansoori said that mobile penetration rate in terms of usage in the UAE has now crossed 200{e1f18614b95d3cd6e4b3128e1cd15d99b042a60a5a19c19b7a8e07e7495efa10}, while household broadband penetration currently stands at 40{e1f18614b95d3cd6e4b3128e1cd15d99b042a60a5a19c19b7a8e07e7495efa10}. Majed Al Mesmar, deputy director general of TRA, said: “In 2010, the telecommunications sector contributed 5.5{e1f18614b95d3cd6e4b3128e1cd15d99b042a60a5a19c19b7a8e07e7495efa10} towards the UAE’s GDP. The country’s operators Etisalat and Du collectively shared 11 million mobile subscribers, 1.6 million fixed telephone subscribers, and 1.4 million internet service subscribers, generating a total of over AED 24 billion.”
The MECOM event has attracted more than 100 exhibitors demonstrating their communications technology and solutions from sectors including government, healthcare, hospitality, banking and finance, oil and gas, real estate, media, manufacturing, and logistics.
